In 2006, during celebrations for the 400th anniversary of the birth of Rembrandt also the Museo Morandi want to pay homage to the great Dutch artist, considering the constant interest Giorgio Morandi addressed primarily to his art of engraving.
The Bolognese painter had in fact five etchings by Rembrandt, four of which are now kept at the museum, also was held to date publications on the subject, to study carefully, though it was written in English, the monograph by Ludwig Münz on Rembrandt's etchings in the output 1952.
The exhibition is curated by Marcia Faietti, Director of Prints and Drawings of the Uffizi and the result of collaboration with the Institute in Florence where, in addition to the notes of Rembrandt etchings, engravings are preserved many of Giorgio Morandi donated the last of her sister ' artist. Morandi
For the engraving activity, which was a lecturer at the Academy of Bologna from 1930 to 1956, it was not a marginal or episodic practice compared to the work of painting, like Rembrandt, moreover, that recorded especially among 1626 and 1665. In an interview
Morandi stated a preference among the engravers, those "who are also artists [...] especially as Rembrandt and Goya." It does not seem
random so that Morandi was devoted to a technical "old" like Rembrandt etching and used a press like that of oak wood, now kept in a room of the museum.
For these reasons, the selective and annotated exhibition housed in the octagonal room of the Museo Morandi will deepen the relationship through the visual similarities between the works of the two engravers, including confirmation and verification of the studies made by Lamberto Vitali onwards. In the first tests of engraving
Morandi, started around the twenties, the technical and formal references to the great Dutch master are very explicit, though in a very free interpretation and original.
The two artists belong, in fact, two worlds and two sensitivity very different but they share the flexibility of the sign and the continuous variation of the track.
The exhibition will show 33 etchings by Rembrandt and Morandi in comparison reveals similarities in the techniques though very precise iconographic juxtapositions far away.
Morandi's attention to Rembrandt is also evidenced by the presence in his library volumes of some Dutch artist to be exhibited.
But when I see shows here? Even more sad ...
Pedro course advice:) Until next time ...
